How to get to Tartu?

Tartu is situated in Southern Estonia and is the second largest city in the country. The easiest way to get to Tartu is to arrive by plane to Tallinn Airport and then take a bus from Tallinn to Tartu.

There are direct flights from most major cities in Europe to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia (180 km from Tartu) and to Riga, the capital of Latvia (250 km from Tartu). For more information see Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport or Riga International Airport. There is also the small Tartu Airport, but currently (as of October 2013) Tartu has direct flights only with Helsinki.

You can arrive in Tallinn also by boat from Helsinki and Stockholm. For more information, see Port of Tallinn.

All buses from Tallinn and Riga to Tartu stop at the Tartu bus terminal (Estonian: “Tartu bussijaam”, see the Tartu bus terminal on Google map).

Travel from TALLINN to TARTU

If you arrive at the Tallinn Airport (Estonian: “Tallinna lennujaam”), you can take a bus directly from the airport to Tartu; see the timetable of buses from Tallinn Airport to Tartu. The buses are usually full during the weekends and on Monday mornings. To guarantee your seat in a bus, you can buy a ticket from the aforementioned webpage up to 10 days in advance and pay for the ticket with a credit card (MasterCard, VISA).

If there is no bus stopping at the airport at suitable time, you can take a taxi or public transportation (bus No. 2) to get from Tallinn airport to Tallinn bus terminal and then take a bus from the terminal to Tartu (see below). Bus No. 2 takes 8 minutes. Public transportation and taxis are waiting in front of the airport building. Bus No. 2 stops at the “Autobussijaam” stop which is not far from the bus terminal, but you still have to cross 2 intersections to reach the bus terminal.

Buses from Tallinn bus terminal (Estonian: “Tallinna bussijaam”) to Tartu leave almost every 30 minutes from 5:00 in the morning (5 a.m.) until 23:59 at night (12 p.m.). For more information see the timetable of buses from Tallinn bus terminal to Tartu. A ticket costs ca 11 € and can be bought at the ticket office inside the bus station (payment by cash or bank card) or from the bus driver (payment by cash) or purchased on the the aforementioned webpage up to 10 days in advance (payment by credit card: MasterCard, VISA). It takes 2.5 hours to reach Tartu. Buses are comfortable (many even offer free WiFi service).

If you arrive by boat, you can take a taxi or public transportation to get from Tallinn sea port to Tallinn bus terminal. The easiest way is to go by taxi. Tram No. 2 (towards Ülemiste) or bus No. 2 will take you to Tallinn bus terminal (the “Autobussijaam” stop) from the port as well, but you still have to cross 2 intersections to reach the bus terminal.

Besides buses, some trains go between Tallinn and Tartu too, but only a few per day. The closest train station to Tallinn Airport is the Ülemiste train station about 1 km from the airport. For train timetables, see the home page of Elron.

If you arrive at night and there are no buses, then an option is to take a taxi from the Tallinn airport straight to Tartu, if you can afford it. According to the web page, the three official taxi providers of Tallinn Airport have nightly rates between 80 and 90 cents per km, which means about 150–170 Euros for the ride. It will take about two hours, depending on your destination in Tartu.

Or you may want to spend a night in Tallinn. The closest hotel to the airport is the Ülemiste Hotel, although there are many other hotels and hostels in Tallinn.

If you have spare time in Tallinn, you may have a walk in the beautiful medieval old town. The walking distance from Tallinn bus terminal to the Old Town Hall Square is 2.3 km and it takes 30 minutes. Alternatively you can take a taxi or public transportation: e. g. trams No. 2 and No. 4 will take you from Tallinn bus terminal (the “Autobussijaam” stop) to the city center. There is also a web page of electronic timetables and maps of public transport in Tallinn. There is a luggage hold in Tallinn bus terminal, where you can leave your luggage (max size 60x45x90 cm) in a locker (24 h costs 1, 2 or 3 € depending on the size of the locker).

Travel from RIGA to TARTU

It takes 3½ to 5 hours to reach Tartu from Riga.

For the buses of Lux Express and Simple Express, you can see the times and buy a ticket by credit card at the Lux Express web page. Some of these buses stop at the Riga Airport, others only at the Riga bus terminal (Riga coach station). The bus fare is in the range between 10 and 25 euros.

For airBaltic passengers, there is a free bus between Riga airport and Tartu, which departs from the airport late in the evening and arrives at the airport early in the morning. For schedule and booking a seat, see the airBaltic homepage.

To catch a bus that only stops at the Riga bus terminal, you can take a taxi or AirBaltic minibus to get from Riga Airport to Riga bus terminal. In addition to Lux Express and Simple Express, there are also some other lines from the Riga bus terminal to Tartu: for more information, see the timetable of buses from Riga coach station to Tartu.
